Word count to pages calculator

A book’s page count depends on more than its word count, because trim size, font size, line spacing, and chapters all change it. Enter your numbers to estimate the page count of a printed paperback, measured with the same margins and font sizes Proselis uses for print.

By the Proselis team · Updated

The standard font size follows the trim size: 10.5 pt for books narrower than 5.5 in, 11 pt up to 6.5 in, and 11.5 pt for wider books.

These counts use the standard font size and line spacing, with one chapter for every 3,500 words. Manuscript pages are double-spaced at 250 words a page.

How does this calculator estimate pages?

It measures the text area of the page from real book margins, calculates how many characters fit on a line at your font size, and divides by the length of an average word. Then it allows for paragraph endings, half-empty pages at the start of each chapter, and about ten pages of front and back matter.

Why don’t manuscript pages match book pages?

A manuscript is double-spaced, with a 12-point font size and one-inch margins. It holds about 250 words a page. A typeset 6 × 9 in book page holds about 300, so the printed book is usually shorter than the manuscript.

Questions

How accurate is this estimate?

Treat it as a planning estimate. Dialogue-heavy books run longer than the estimate, and books with long paragraphs run shorter. Only a layout of the actual manuscript gives an exact count.

What is the smallest book KDP will print?

A KDP paperback needs at least 24 pages. The maximum depends on the trim size and paper, and it can reach 828 pages.

How many words are on a page of a printed book?

A printed page holds about 250 to 350 words, depending on the trim size, font size, and line spacing. A 6 × 9 in page with an 11-point font size holds about 300.

Does the page count change the spine width?

Yes. On KDP, each page adds about 0.0025 inches of spine on cream paper and 0.002252 inches on white paper.
